Choke cable assembly

Postby Lambr62 » Sun Oct 30, 2016 10:20 pm

Hi,
I have noticed when I operate the choke the plunger inside the carb hardly moves at all. I also noticed that the sleeve at the back of the choke lever housing moves forward when I switch the choke on and if I hold this while I switch the choke on to prevent it moving forward the plunger inside the carb moves clear as I would expect it to when the choke is on. Should this sleeve move forward when I operate the choke? If this is the case could the outer cable be too long that's causing this problem. Thanks for any help.

This could be a number of issues, either individually or a combination of problems.

I am guessing that the sleeve at the back of the choke lever is plastic. These can often be poor quality and the outer of the cable can slip past the shoulder that is intended to keep the outer in place. These were originally made of steel, but I think later ones and all after market ones were plastic, which can stretch and wear.

There should be a tiny washer between the end of the outer and the nipple at the lever end. If this is incorrectly sized, it can also slip past the outer cable stop at the lever end.

The inner cable can be too long, and often needs an elbow fitted in order function.

I do custom build choke cables for £5, but you need to be certain that the components at the end of the cable are good befor you fit a new cable.

I'm presuming your carb has an adjuster similar to the gear cable adjuster. That may take out the slack if it's raised Basically the inner is too long for the outer or you are missing an elbow. All depends how much you can move the outer before it starts to lift the plunger

Hi Knowledge,
The sleeve is made of steel and the cable will not pass through the back of the sleeve. There is also a small washer like you mentioned and this does not pass through the sleeve either. So I am guessing there is an issue with the length of the outer/inner? The carb I have fitted is a 25MM Dellorto PHBL. Thanks.

OK. That's good, but these cable have poor tolerances and do not easily transfer from one carb to another (different) carb.

With the cable fitted, can you grab the outer cable just above where it enters the carb, and move it easily up and down without operating the choke plunger? If so, this would indicate that the inner is too long.

With a standard choke cable and a 25phbl I found that my inner was way too long.

I cut it 3 times before I was happy with the length but that was just because I'm a bottler. ;)

had the problem of too long inners , and faffed around for ages getting longer adjusters or spacing the cable away from them, until i saw the light, make the outer longer with an old clutch or any other old outer you have laying around, cut to whatever you need and no need to move/ solder nipples..easy

Hi Knowledge,
Yes I can move the outer without moving the plunger. Sounds like the inner is too long judging from the comments from the other guys.

Ok. If you are not confident about shortening the inner, let me know and I can make you a new one.

Good luck
