Which kick start shaft

Postby gunfox » Sat Jan 14, 2017 10:39 pm

Hi all.
I needed a new kick start shaft, so bought one on line for my Italian 1960 LI 125, but the slot for the screw was too high up, & wouldn't sit back into the bracket, so I returned it, & they gave me a refund, but said that they had sold loads of them with no problem, but it was different to the original, which had naff splines, any ideas please.
Thanks

I don't understand your description.

When you say slot for the screw, do you mean the slot and screw that deploy the teeth that bite onto first gear?

I wish I had an sx200 for every time I had heard that excuse! I have had one of these with the slot in the wrong place. I was lucky enough to live near Shawfire Lambretta so I pick up the correct one. Try scootopia.

If yours is a series 2,the series 2 kick start shaft doesn't have a recess in the splines for the kick start bolt, the series 3 does.

Sorry everyone, I`m not very good at explaining, but I now have a spare parts catalogue to go by, so here goes: The slot I am talking about, is in the shaft where the reference pin screws into the piston, & what`s happening is, because the slot in the shaft was milled out too high up, the reference pin wouldn't locate back into the cam, therefore it was always engaged.
I hope this explains my problem, & perhaps some one could point me in the direction to where I can get a new kick start shaft that would be an exact copy of my original one.
Thanks for putting up with my vague drivel .

This post may help http://www.scooterotica.org/forum/viewt ... t&start=30
If you scroll down, the bit about the kickstart begins near the bottom and goes on for about three pages.

I've had to address this on a pal's bike recently, when he ran into issues trying to fit a new shaft after he broke his early / thin type on his 150 Special. His pinch bolt retaining slot was out of alignment with the pedal/lever's bolt hole and effectively wouldn't go on far enough to allow the bolt to pass through the slot in the shaft, even though the lever was fully home against the retaining lip (note: not against the casing/or oil seal/circlip washer but actually against the small stop on the shaft). As such, this wasn't a case of being able to push the lever on further as it was already hard against the stop. Even machining the casing down (inside or out) wouldn't have helped as the shaft's stop wouldn't be altered.

In the end it was as simple as offering up the lever, pushing it on as far as it would go, marking where the pinch slot in the lever was, removing the lever and then grinding off only a little metal to increase the slot on the lever (corresponding with mark) to allow the bolt to fit though once modified. This was done with a dremel mini cutting wheel (I'm lazy and the shaft was hard... not sure I've used that phrase before!) but could easily have been done with a hand file and a little effort. The lever now fits and tightens up beautifully.
