Poor running on the way to Davos

Postby coaster » Thu Aug 21, 2014 12:15 am

My Avanti took a severe dislike to the mountains on the way to Davos and also struggled on all the hills on the way back through Austria, Germany, Belgium etc. It was so bad on the climb up to Davos that I was down to 27 mph flat out in 2nd gear  Since getting back I have only ridden it a couple of times and it was struggling to get over 60mph :? Today, I thought I'd check the carb and discovered that the throttle was only opening to 3/4 :? Investigation revealed that the little plate inside the throttle slide (30 PHBH) that holds the needle in place and also serves to keep the throttle cable from jumping out was out of position and was preventing the slide from lifting all the way. It took all of 15 seconds to rectify and when I thought about it I could trace it back to replacing the throttle cable at the roadside on the way down, in my haste I didn't notice that it was sticking up.....Hey ho, it goes like stink again now though ;)

It happens,
On the way to AFs bike was running a bit off, ragged. For about 20 mile , okish flat out rough as old boots low Down.
Filled up every one else Was 4 ltrs I was 7.5. I'm thinking dying LT coil air leak or worse. Turns out I had a bottle of oil drop off th spare wheel and knock the choke full on.

Altitude does odd things to carburation and running back from Milan in 97 we found that bikes in our group that had run well all the way there through south of France suddenly ran like a bag of nails, whilst others suddenly came into their own! There is plenty on line to explain this, discussing oxygen % and combustion at altitude.

That said, it seems as though the throttle cable seating seems to have been identified as the main cause of any issue.

Nice to hear that the AVanti is back to fine form :)

What was doing my head in at the time was that there were 2 other Avantis in our group that were running fine, I even had a long chat with Scooterlam about it on the Saturday evening. MUCH happier now though as thinking about it, that little plate is all that holds the needle in place so that was probably sticking and causing it to run rich low down as well :?

Although not lammy but Vespa, my T5 played up before and during the run to Weston, really boggy and mechanic couldn't find what it was, was doing something to the rear wheel and the whole end can fell off the Polini pipe as the section that held it on had rusted through from the inside... One chrome SImonini later and its running like a train :)
