Kickstart Bolt M7 or M8 Casa arm on Casa shaft?

Postby ADAMOD » Tue Aug 08, 2017 2:41 pm

Afternoon guys, this is my first time on here but been a LCGB member for years.

I have rebuilt my kickstart mechanism using new Casa shaft and kickstart arm also ordered a new clamping bolt for the arm.

Although all the parts came from the same dealer (Rimini) and were ordered together I may have a discrepancy? The bolt is M7 and the notch in the splines on the shaft is also 7mm, but the hole in the kickstart arm is 8mm.

So am I supposed to use a 7mm bolt in the 8mm hole so that it fits the notch on the shaft. I have been thinking that possibly the extra clearance in the hole is to stop the bolt binding up on the hole as the clamp is tightened down on the splines.

Or is the arm manufactured with an oversized hole meaning that I need a non standard 8mm diameter clamping bolt which will also mean I would need to run a reamer down the hole in the arm to open up the notch in the shaft to allow it to fit.

All very finicy but on a rainy Tuesday afternoon these are the make or break questions in life :?

According to this the remade kickstarts have 8mm bolts.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lambretta-7mm ... Swvg9Xe6nR

cheers Paul,
That MB 7mm bolt looks top quality!

It does seem like a bit of a grey area, I wouldn't be surprised if I was fitting a far eastern manufactured kickstart and it had an 8mm hole. It stands to reason if they are fitting poor quality bolts in their parts they would break and so they might up size the bolt/hole.
The grey area for me is the fact that I have a Casa kick start arm and Casa shaft so if they were going to up the size on the arm fixing hole surely they would up the size on relief in the shaft. Its like they have come from 2 different companies  I still think the over size hole must be by design to accommodate the slight rotation as the pedal clamps on the shaft.

Anyway thats probably way to much detail for such a small issues in Lambretta circles.
Thanks for your time guys.
I've fitted the 7mm bolt and will let you know why that was a bad idea shortly
Hopefully not!

Personally, especially on tuned motors I like to use an M8 Allen screw and locknut. I run a 8 mm drill bit thru the pedal hole when fitted to the shaft to ream the shaft groove. M7 bolts tend to bend to easily especially if the pedal has 8mm holes.
