side panels warped/won't fit on loop curve

Postby swissdean » Sat Sep 09, 2017 1:35 pm

feeling dumb..bought some repro (SX special) sidepanels and then went to the expense of having them sprayed in the UK, before picking them up and bringing them back overseas, got hom ethis pm all excited to find LH side fits fine, but RH side bows out at front, barely clips on front lower lip near footboards and on top near seat front on curve is bowed out about 8-10mm..won't clip on even with pressure...is there any way to reshape this without damaging my lovely new paint?

don't know how many times I''ve read people saying dry build first,,wish id saved a chunk of change now on the spraying..

any help/ideas appreciated..can add photo if you think it'll help

Thanks

Isn't hindsight wonderful? You're not the only one to have come unstuck as I know. Dry-build AFTER blasting springs to my own mind....

The panel is no use without fitting, so you have to risk the flexibility/adhesion of your fresh paint.

Take two well clothed, patient adults (with no rings or jewelry on their hands) & try & twist out the offending distortion would be my advice. Try & put the force on the inside lower edge of the panel, if that makes sense....I managed it on my own by holding one end of the panel between my thighs & it is something I've done previously a few times with old OEM painted panels with no issue.

I got away with it as you should, though if lacquered (& still soft) be very careful not to leave imprints.

Good Luck.

Try and do somewhere warm, inside a paint sprayers oven would be good! But appreciate may not have that at home! Be careful of paint splitting.

Also just a little warning for others. I did a dry build with my latest build, I fettled the Legshield toolbox to get a perfect fit, but when come back from the sprayers it was a mess and on the outside of the toolbox onthe vertical side the gaps where bigger. needed thicker trim. (Does not look right) to correct. The only reason which we could come up with is that the 'oven' must have warped the Legshields back to their natural curve if that makes sense. In future I would get the Legshields sprayed first, then fettle the toolbox (Being ultra careful) and take back to the sprayer's, albeit at more cost!
