TV175 Engine Build Advice

Postby NorthernJordan » Wed Jan 24, 2018 8:53 pm

Im going to be building a standard tv175 series two , and I'm after some advice regarding standard engine builds.
I think a good compromise would be TV top end, gp crank a with TV rod and electronic ignition. That would give some interchangeable components with my main rally hack should I need a stator or flywheel.

So the questions are:
What's recognised as the best reasonable price standard ignition ?
Would there be any benefit to using a 60mm crank on a standard TV set up?
What's the best standard exhaust? I hear clubmans sometimes kill TV performance?

Cheers

Also, what's the standard TV gearing like?

Hi Jordan,

I can’t answer all your questions, but what I do know is that the TV175 engine configuration leads to a very smooth engine. The reason for this is often laid at the fact that rod is twice the length of the stroke. Altering the stroke to 60mm would alter this ratio, so think before you buy.

I think there are some people who believe that Innocenti got it right with the TV175 engine, and the 200cc engine was a step too far. This might indicate that the TV ‘box and standard pipe are just right.

Perhaps the answer lies in the very first sentence of your post “I am going to be building a standard Series II”.

Enjoy the ride

Also, why not just stick with points? There must be plenty.of points stators lying around you could have for nowt and there's something right about keeping them on a real classic like that. In fact you can have the stator from that engine I bought from you a couple of years back. Now you can keep the original crank and just have it refurbished. More money saved.

I was going to use the bike for some rallying and I wanted the ignition to be interchangeable with my main scooter. Then I can just swap the contents of the toolboxes between the two as and when, appreciate the offer though!

I'll just stick to the standard stroke, can't see much merit on a standard engine. Didn't know if the extra couple of cc's would make a huge difference in grunt.

As for exhausts, I remember Adam Winston posting about the trials and tribulations of using clubmans on TVs with standard coming out on top. So what exactly is the best standard exhaust?

My TV3 is still standard and on points.

Give the battery a boost on the old smart charger now then.

All works fine and an effortless ride.

FYI I'm using a Gori which looks standard(ish), sounds nice and runs well.

I'd think about a rebore to 64mm and a Suzuki piston, in keeping with 116 rod. The 58 x 116 being the true essence of the TV engine, scootopia 22mm carb through the air box and a Casa S2 clubman. Only heard good things about the Casa clubman. It's the route I'm contemplating with mine, although I may opt for the MBbgm 195 kit with Suzuki piston to work with 116 crank. Ignition would be DC, Anthony Tambs rebulit DC stator or BGM DC stator with Wassel regulator. Not sure on mid weight 1.8 to 2.0kg flywheel or full fat 2.7kg. I'm not too fussed about keeping things original but I won't modify anything to a point where I can't return it back to standard if need be. Hence I'd keep anything taken off. DC for better lights and horn and to power 21st century toys, as in Sat Navs and phone charges.

Hi
I would agree with your first paragraph think you on the right path, gearbox great coupled with a clubman your onto a winner imho. I ran mine for quite a while on the standard crank with the TV rod which gave up the ghost just outside Keswick on the return journey on the C2c last year.

However I have now upgraded to a Harry Barlow crank, lovely piece of kit, and a pleasure to deal with I might add.

The TV motor really is a joy to ride with its smooth almost turbine like power delivery.

I just hope I don't come across you again stricken and smashed up like last time on Corney fell

Anyway good luck with the build, and enjoy the TV motor I absolutely love mine.

Oh also, I would highly recommend a stator from Anthony Tambs and one of his pick up kits, a great addition to any lambretta.

I'll be embarking on a similar S3 TV 175 motor build for a mate and that be using ;
GP SIL webs with RB 116 rod, Suzuki piston in TV barrel, standard box and gearing, 42mm scootopia clubman, carb likely 24mm but will be ran through modified air box. Ignition with be SIL flywheel welded and lightened with rewired/checked SIL stator.

Tried to capture the essence of the original build, with a few tried and tested tweeks and keeping original look.

Along the parts way mate has aquired a NOS TV 66mm conversion piston but it's unlikely that this will be used
