Extra Fuel Light

Postby Delboyli150 » Sun Oct 22, 2017 7:07 pm

Hi Guys Can you help?

Before I take the horn cast and headset of can someone tell me, what I want to do is put an extra light for the fuel senor onto the Tool box.

I have installed the SIP2 with a fuel sensor which is working all OK. I want to put a light on the leg shield toolbox to illuminate when fuel is low.Do I just need to connect one end of this light to the orange sensor which goes to the tap and the other to earth?

Or do I need to put one end to the orange sensor which goes to the tap and the other to a permeant LIve?

Help in advance would be appreciated as do not want to strip headset/horn cast down.

I would wire it up very temporary first to see if it works. Hope so as the flashing mileage display is fekin useless and I've missed it twice  and was looking to do something similar.

If it helps, I have this set up on my S2. No Sip speedo.
The red DC feed out from the MB regulator to the fuel tap. Then on to the led mounted in the tool box which is earthed. Works a treat. Make sure you by a 12v DC led indicator. The regulator also powers up my USB charger for phone, sat nav ect.

Hi Guys

Thanks for comments so far....but....

The LED works OK as tested to the Positive and ground of the battery.

I have tried many ways to get the LED extra light working but to no joy.

At the moment the fuel tap is connected straight to the SIP2 Fuel sensor and works a treat, thought I could just 'tap' into these connections but no joy.
I have tried to temporary go from Positive of battery to LED light , one cable, then the other to Fuel sensor no joy.
I have tried to temporary go from Positive of battery to LED light , one cable, then earth of the other cable, no joy.
I have tried to temporary just connect both ends of LED cable to the Fuel tap where the SIP2 Sensor connects to the fuel cables , no joy.
Done the above with connection to earth as well no joy!

Can anyone give me any pointers as do not want to take of horncast/headset.

Try the connections to the led reversed. They only work one way

Ah good point Gp200ts1 !

I must admit the LED has a red cable and a black cable so was putting the red to the Positive....Will try again tomorrow as I could see the hammer getting used!

The only thing I can think to this is in certain configurations the LED stays on, but the SIP is flashing Fuel so I would have thought the LED would flash as well!

Any other ideas chaps while at it..

Will update tomorrow.

Use a length of gear/clutch cable as a draw wire this should find its way along existing cables so you dont have to take the horncasing off.

NO, the flashing of the SIP display is due to the speedo's internal electronics, if you have a solid LED and a flashing fuel display then that is correct...Eureka, you have your solution 8-)

Update.

Tried the LED the other way round, no joy.

Coaster, The solid light came on when the tank was full!, I could understand if when the SIP flashed then the LED came on solid that would be great! and exactly what I am after, but this is not happening.

I have a feeling that it is all to do with the internal electrics as you mentioned.

Anyone got this sort of set up?

Right, that's fine, all you need to do is use the feed from the tap to operates a small relay which has some contacts that only make when the relay is de-energised, Then connect your led directly to a 12v DC feed via the those contacts. Something like this would get the job done http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Finder-40-52- ... 0005.m1851

It will also be possible to do it with a transistor and that is the route that I will take but will have to do some experimentation to find out what works ;)

Ah Cheers Coaster, looks like a winter project!

I can see the logic but was hoping for a simpler way! Going down this route I would be concerned that the relay would vibrate too easily and break. If you do go down the transistor route can you let me know how you got on?

Or does anyone else on here can come up with a simpler route?

I have had a check on line and the transistor route might not be quite as simple as I thought. Those miniature relays are very robust though, I've got one in my ignition circuit which has been wedged in my headset for a few years now and is still fine after thousands of miles. If you were going to put it in the glove box I would stick it to a piece of foam rubber.

Just had a play around with mine and the led will light when the fuel warning comes on in the speedo. You DON'T need a relay. The speedo power supply sends a 5v positive feed out to the switch on the yellow wire. If the sender float is at the bottom (low fuel) the contact is made and the 5v is sent to the speedo on the blue wire. All you need to do is cut into the blue wire and connect the + of the LED to it, connect the other leg of the LED to earth. You will need a 5volt LED though (a 3voly will do but might have a slightly shorter life)

My scooter runs a full DC setup with a Wassel regulator/rectifier but I believe the SIP power supply box will convert whatever feed it gets to DC 5 volts for its inner electronics.

Hi Coaster

Hope you have a good winter break!

Just to let you know will be having a look into this this weekend, (ordering upa 5v led as I only got 12v one) then have a go.

I seem to remember that you have converted a BGM AC stator to DC, can you PM me pretty pics please or send me a link cannot seem to find any instructions!
