How to secure a Battery in the toolbox?

Putting a mid range tank in so have lopped off the original battery tray. I'd like to mount the battery and fuses in the toolbox. I'm thinking something fixed to the bottom, raised so wires can fit underneath and with space to bolt on the fuse box.

Would the ve@pa battery tray work? Looks ideal but pictures can be misleading. If you've solved this can you please share how? Cheers

Thanks for the reply Chris. This is on a frame breather so the rear leg doesn't have the same bolt on options. However would you say the one you have could be bolted down in the toolbox? Would it fit?

It depends on the size/weight of the battery. I used a light weight Shorai lithium iron battery and used the original battery tray mounted in the toolbox. It sits partly on the small flat shelf and has been fine there for several years now.

The original battery tray was rusted to mince so can't use that. Is the reference to size and weight based on using the frame breather tray?

No, it's a series 2 tray, you could make one or buy one from scooter restorations. Needed a light weight fairly powerful battery to run combo lights.

Buy some thin ali sheet off eBay, and cut it to make your own custom battery tray. Pop rivet the sides together, and then pop rivet the tray into the bottom of the tool box.

There is a common light weight packaging foam which is petrol resistant and obsorbs the vibes. If you can find some of this and pack-out the new battery box, it can only help.

TBH a battery in the toolbox is alright with a shopping trolley but not with a Tourer.
As youths, on our way to whatever coastal resort, travelin by night, I used to put tins of beans and spaghetti (with those little sausages) and macaroni in the toolbox.
Come 2 in the morning when yer crashin in some norfolk strawberry patch you've got hot munch and fruit before crawlin into yer doss bag. Happy days.
A battery wouldn't survive very long in those conditions. The fitting of potentially explosive materials into a contained space is also known as a Grenade!

Knowledge: thanks for the suggestion. I had considered making my own but was hoping to shortcut by bolting (or riveting) something off the shelf. I will look in to that though. It would be nicer to have a personal creation.

I'm fitting a large leg shield toolbox. Don't intend to use the standard one for anything other than electrics. You've got me thinking though...I might leave the toolbox out entirely. More space then and easier to access when needed.

A Vethpa battery tray can be bolted to the back of your tool box and takes a standard size battery

I have a gell cell battery mounted in the space where the airfilter box would be, secured from the top spine in a custom made bracket. Tucked up, out of the way, but only needs the release 2 M6 nuts under the seat to remove it with the battery if needed. You must have a rubber block between the 2 fixings to absorb the vibration. Without it, the nuts are likely to undo themselves and the bolts get fatigued and snap.

Hi,
I made a container from 4 sections of angle brackets and bolted it to the base of the toolbox.
The battery makes a snug fit inside with the use of rubber matting.
This was done with the toolbox out of the frame.
with the battery fitted I re-inserted the tool box into the frame.
I drilled a hole in the back of the toolbox for the wires.
Its a bit heath robinson but has worked fine for a couple of years.

I used a Electrical socket alloy mounting box for mine, softish and easy to work with . lined inside with rubber matting to make battery a good fit and less vibration then fastened imnside my legsheild toolbox

Good idea! wish i had thought of that instead of messing around with 4 sections trying to ensure alignment!!

Very carefully would be my suggestion. any spanner thrown in can cause a fire. I opted for a small box as mentioned above but its mounted on the rear leg and a bolt through the mudguard. No faffing when you need to change a wheel, Fuse on one side and Agusto on the other, think that a 5amp battery if I remember correctly

On my S2 with a midrange tank my battery is in one of those toolboxes that fit under the legshields by the rear wheel which works well, on my other S2 that doesn't have a battery tray I've got a smaller alarm battery which sits on top of the rear mudgaurd
