16t Front Sprocket upgrade is it worth it....

Postby Nigel. S » Thu Feb 01, 2018 9:57 pm

..... on an italian LI150 gearbox?
(Casa185, clubman type exhaust.)

Hi, could you expect a worthwhile benefit? I suspect the gear calculators would suggest a couple mph more? but apart from top speed would it be better throughout the gears?
I appreciate it's a conservative kit and enjoy it for what it is and have been surprised at its top speed (gps) But we're never happy, are we?

I went 16x46 on a li box with mugello 186 and bgm clubman. it's a great cruising set up. will sit at 60 with ease. worth it imo.

Cheers Steve

Thanks Steve
It's an easy upgrade so might give it a go.

That will give you almost SX200/TV 175 gearing and should be a good upgrade.

I run 16x46 on Li150 gearbox with Gt186 and franspeed race, Casa and clubman should pull that with ease. You will need an 81 link chain with pull down tensioner though

Thanks all, appreciated

I thought a stretched 80 link chain would do it?
But then I realise for "stretched" read "knackered"

I did exactly this recently, and yes there is a big difference, but you have to remember you will lose acceleration, you need to decide what you are going to do more, cruising at high speed, or nipping around town?

As mentioned from others I am cruising at 63mph at 63K rpm, spot on.

^ thanks.
I do like the engine as is, so yes - need to think about any trade off. I'll give it a go. Can't be that big a ball ache to change sprockets to suit a particular rally. Twisty up and down or a drawn out slog.

Ive got an RT195 with 28mm PWK and BGM Clubman. Running an LI150 box with 15/46. Revs quite happily to 8000 rpm in all gears. I went to a 16/46 set up as I found it quite revvy with the 5.21 final ratio, I thought the 4.89 final ratio would as you say let me cruise at a slightly lower RPM.
However I found the engine wouldn't pull past 6000 rpm in 4th gear. Would still get to 8000 rpm in 1/2/3 gears.

MB were adamant the engine should pull to 8000 rpm in 4th...but it wouldn't.

Also going to Woolacombe in September, I found I was having to knock down gears a lot more than on 15/46 to get around the twisty up/down roads across Exmoor.

Went back to 15/46.
