Sliding dog

Hi, just wondered , can the sliding dog / gear selector be removed & changed without taking out the layshaft ? I know it can be a bit of a faff to get the balls & spring back in but is it possible ? thanks for any info

I wouldn't have thought it was impossible if you have the dog with the slopes on but you'd need small hands...
