Binx Self Locking Nuts

Postby jonw » Thu Nov 13, 2014 4:08 pm

Has anyone used binx nuts to secure their exhaust downpipes or does anyone have any thoughts regards using them?

Correct me if I am wrong, but these nuts are steel. My initial thought is that none of the nuts supplied to secure the exhaust are steel, they are all brass.

Can you get them in M7?

They are available in brass but I haven't yet found M7 although I'haven't made any direct enquiry.
I was just wondering if anyone had already sourced or tried them?
Forgive my ignorance but why brass and not steel?

The heat makes the steel nuts corrode to the steel studs.Brass just don't do that. And even if it does, you can cut them off easy as pie.

Cylinder head nuts are steel and surely exposed to similar temps and my 1000cc Honda uses steel nuts?
The binx or arero tight self locking nuts just seemed a good solution to the age old problem of loosening exhaust nuts?

its worth a try , if they do corrode onto the studs then all that will happen is that the nut and stud will come out as one so simply use new studs !

We call them philidas nuts you may have more luck trying that. Some may say lambretta exhaust never stay on long enough to corrode

K-nuts are brilliant on loads of things but note the spanner size is a lot smaller than standard so may not be ideal for exhaust flanges

Hi all, K-nuts are perfect as exhaust nuts, 7mm thread - 8mm spanner, i use a long 6 point 8mm socket.

So much easier to deal with & I think give a more positive feel when tightening as opposed to brass nuts. We have used them for years really good with no issues other than rubbish exhaust gaskets. Hope this helps....Steve

Do you use flat washers on them?

Can't be much metal if you have a 8mm spanner on a 7mm thread.

Hi all, K nuts are a flanged self locking nut, they are used in Motorsport by race engineers for exhausts, inlets, cylinder heads etc.

Davla, i don't use flat washers under them as the holes on our stubs are not overly large & the nuts seat ok, but I don't see why you couldn't use a flat washer if the holes were too large?

Tractor man, sorry i don't understand the relevance of metal thickness, but maybe there is? All I can offer is my own personal experience. I've used them for years with no issues on all ours, with the only odd issue being a crap copper type exhaust gasket which crumbled from the inside over a short time causing the exhaust stub to loosen. The obvious other advantage I find is being able to use an 8mm spanner/socket as opposed to 11mm.

Hope this helps one way or the other....Steve

I'm confused too! 8mm spanner size is usually for 5mm threads. Do you mean the same size as for a 8mm thread ie, 13mm spanner size?

Hi Gaz, yep they're the ones, I'm sure you can get them cheaper than that with a bit of Google assistance!

Hi Paul, please see Gary's link above, 7mm internal - 8mm external. Great on Vega exhausts as well. ;)

As I say, I only offer my personal experience.....Steve

I never have trouble with exhausts nuts coming loose - I make extended studs and double nut - but I like the look of them as some exhausts with flange on the u bend are often difficult to get a socket on.

Im sold and gonna get some just to have in
