Start the engine. If it pumps the balloon, then you likely have seal or halite washer problems.

Never thought of that, that's a brilliant idea.

Having slept on it, I have decided to put the engine back together and follow the advice given with regards to trying fresh petrol and the balloon :)

I did put some of the petrol out of the tank in a clear plastic tray for a day. There were no signs of oil separation or water. I also put some of the oil in fresh petrol. It did form a globule at the bottom initially but, by the following morning, the oil had mixed in of its own accord.

I replaced the petrol with new from the pump today. I changed the 2T oil too to a Putoline semi. The engine ticks over fine and revs on the stand. No sign of the balloon inflating and the engine now stalls again when you block the tailpipe.

I do not think that the 2T oil was the issue as I run the same oil in other scooters. I can only conclude that it was the petrol. I used a Sainsbury’s which has a busy footflow at the garage. I don’t normally use this petrol station. I think I put E5 in. Historically, I used to always stick E10 in but, for some reason, since the Eurolambretta last year I have started putting E5 in if I can get it.

I’ll cable it up again and go for a test ride but it seems okay now.

I’ll also revert to putting E10 in, certainly whilst in the UK anyway.

Thanks for the assistance.

Hopefully, it seems I won’t have to take the crank out just yet :)

One of the cases that I know of related to a busy big-brand station that has high turnover and is used by a pal as it is just down the road from pal's house. Correct pump used but fuel obviously contaminated.

My own 'contaminated fuel' episode was at the busy and large 'last fuel opportunity' prior to ferry loading at Hook of Holland. After immediately running into issue after leaving Harwich I pulled into a lay by that had a broken down Lambretta and broken down car awaiting recovery! We had all filled up at same pump.

Contaminated fuel from respectable outlets is very real... and contaminated fuel should always be considered if you run into issues after a fill up.

Hopefully you have this sorted. We can return to suspected fuel starvation, if still evident.

Fingers crossed

I had a similar experience on the way back from euro Lambretta France
Scooter fine all the way there and most of the way back
I filled up at Amiens on the way to Calais and within 2KM I was having issues - it was revving as if there was air leak - and CHT was high . I stopped it and checked the usual things like split rubber.etc I nursed it home to the uk and it would only run ok with way the choke on.
When I got home I stripped it all down couldn’t find anything wrong and it’s been fine since - over 1500 miles including C2C

Just to finish this post, I have ridden the scooter a couple of times now. No sign of any fuel starvation and it is running well. The main issue must have been contaminated fuel.

Thanks for the update, which serves as a reminder to others not to discount fuel issues too quickly. The issue of contaminated fuel, even from well respected sources, is more common than many riders realise.

Thanks for the update.
