I expect you'd need to ride an identical scoot with a Li150 gearbox to be able to compare the performance difference betwween the 2x gear ratios........... otherwise the Li125 gearbox would just seem normal I guess.
There is no denying the facts the sprocket teeth and ratios show the large gaps.

This 'jump' probably wouldn't be a problem to a rider that is happy to pootle around town and doesn't accelerate hard at every single opportunity .

For someone looking for significant performance upgrade who has gone to the cost and trouble to fit an expensive 200cc upgrade engine it would be bonkers imo to leave an early S3 Li125 gearset in place because the ratios would negate any engine performance increase gained.

I expect you must be right Johnny you must have tried them both.
I have.
The Op said he wanted use the gearbox he has.So I would say to him go ahead and try it with a decent small block kit, right pipe and carb.
As I said mine served me well over many miles.

I dont "pootle" around town,I do quite a lot of miles and for your information I have two Li 150 gearboxes, one in a series 2 wich also has a Casa 185 top end,but I prefer to ride the series 3 which has the Li 125 gearbox.

Unfortunately we have all written far more than the original post. He has a 125 gearbox and wants to keep it. Will it work well yes But.
A bit more info on the new top end would help.
These bloody things Will bleed you dry if you let them. If you are sticking a 175 or cheaper Ali barrel it would be fine. Pipe would be the next consideration
If you are going for an RB screamer with a pipe that needs to be in the power band then maybe you need to look at the box. o and the clutch crank flywheel layshaft etc
I had a very early Casa kit and they are IMO amazing for pulling like a train. That set up does not rev Won't benefit from an expansion pipe though I would have loved to have tried one. I will ask my mates about me pootling about
Give us more info skip, discussion is fun

I wasn't accusing you of anything . I have absolutely no idea what scooters you own or use

You stated that you use an early series 3 gearset and you haven't noticed a jump between the intermmediate gears. There is clearly a large gap between the early S3 Li125 gear ratios compared to any of the 150cc or 175cc or 200cc gear sets thats a simple fact . perhaps the gearset you have fitted is a late series 3 Li125cc ??

So I postulated that perhaps you were the sort of rider that didn't wring the neck out of your scooter in which case you probably wouldn't be aware of any gearing gaps.

I have never ridden a 125 scooter or one with this type of box so I have no idea how the different ratios compare . I do know is that nobody uses an early series 3 Li125 gearbox on a high performance engine

Thanks for all your comments.
The received wisdom is undoubtedly that the Li150 box is better. However it's also clear that some successfully use and even prefer the Li125 box. I'll stick with the original box initially and see how I get on.
Thanks again.
