Having just put my Avanti motor into my GP I can't get a decent kick as the clutch is slipping even without the cable attached to the arm.

It seems to slip 2 kicks out of 3 as if the clutch is pulled in. There is a witness mark on the top plate, 5 plate BGM corks and assorted steels - it separates ok with the compressor - 1-2mm gap.

How much is it safe to grind out of the kickstart shaft? Anyone got any pics of what they ground out?

I ground out 1mm from the shaft housing, not be able too post up pics until later

Yes 1mm will give you ample clearance. If you think about it, the lot would be jammed tight if it needed more.
Also make sure that shaft is shimmed out sufficiently.

I just took the high spots of the back of the shaft, then applied paint to the top plate. That seems to have been enough to stop the shaft - which is through as far as it goes and correctly shimmed - rubbing on the top plate.

However I till had the problem that the clutch seemed to be compressed even with the cable disconnected when it was buttoned up. I've had it all to bits again this morning and found another witness mark around the casting that surrounds the clutch plunger recess. I've relieved that area with a needle file and now all is good.
