Question to ask

Hi

I own a Lambretta Series 3 and up until now a relative has been riding my scooter with me on the back but circumstances have come up
I Have a disability which only allows me to use my left arm and very little in my right arm
I would like my own independence
is it possible to move the accelerator to the left side and the gears to the right ?? If this is possible how can it be done

Hi mate,

I'm sorry to hear about your circumstances.

I would think that the gears are harder work than the throttle. The clutch and twist gear combination can be a killer. So if your left arm is your stronger I'd be looking to keep that there.


I would investigate some form of foot operated throttle. That shouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility. I have also heard of other making foot gear change conversions. So a combination of some extra foot controls and/or moving hand controls to a more convinient side then you could be into a winner?

Hopefully others will be able to give a more insight into this.

If you are able to grip the right hand handlebar you could have a thumb operated throttle like a quad bike and a thumb operated hydraulic front brake. That’s if you can exert pressure with your thumb of course.

I'd consider using the rear brake pedal for the throttle and add a second pedal on the left to operate a rear brake.

But you'd have the problem of operating the front brake, which is on the right and fairly important.

By the time you've done all that it might be easier to go for an auto conversion, this would remove the problem of the gear change and clutch. All you'd need to operate is brakes, which could be linked by one lever and the throttle, which could be by foot or your left hand.

Another option would be hydraulic front and rear brake linked to operate as one from a master cylinder operated by the rear brake pedal. Then there's just the throttle to sort which could be left foot (tricky to use in my opinion) or by thumb on either left or right bar.

A few ways to skin a cat.

In 1986 my left upper arm was temporarily paralysed for about 6 months following an argument between my 150 super and a lada (doesn't get any less cool than that). I could ride perfectly fine as my hand was ok. Only a problem if I took my left hand off the bars when riding as i had to stop ( not fun without a clutch) and lift it back with my right! quite funny but my point is that it's easy to ride once you've got a system that works for you.
