I have two machines which have been re-registered on an age-related A plate (1963). Can they be MoT exempt?

It seems you do not need to declare that it is MoT exempt. I quote from the gov.uk website says:

What you have to do

You must apply for a vehicle tax exemption to stop paying vehicle tax. This is sometimes called putting a vehicle into the ‘historic tax class’.

You do not have to apply to stop getting an MOT for your vehicle each year. However, you must still keep it in a roadworthy condition.

The vehicle is already tax exempt, so I should be ok. However, I might fall foul of the bit about:

no ‘substantial changes’ have been made to the vehicle in the last 30 years, for example replacing the chassis, body, axles or engine to change the way the vehicle works

Should it take my 283cc engine out and replace it with a standard Li150?

Terrific. How on earth do we get away with that? Actually, I still don’t believe that we don’t have to pay road tax. It seems the most benevolent thing that the Government has ever bestowed on us powered two wheelers.

I know what you are saying guys, but when you think about how difficult the Government and the insurance companies make it for people to get on the road and stay on the road (especially if you are young), it just seems odd that they should be benevolent at all.

I keep expecting the Minsitry of Transport to slap themselves on the head (in a Doh! moment) when they realise what they have been doing all of these year. Long may they not notice.

I suspect that it is what it is because influential people in government own classic vehicles just like us.
Us plebs are just a casualty of it, not the cause.

Ironically, I think it may have been a harmonisation with some EU piece of legislation.
