Engine mounts

I've often grumbled through gritted teeth about my innate ability to buy rubbish engine mounts, I seem to have to change them much too regularly. Is it likely that I may have been a contributor to the problem by over tightening the nuts on the engine bolt thus causing the rubber to handle the rotation instead of the mounts rotating on the bar? If so, how does one know when to stop tightening?

The rubber is supposed to handle the rotation. Bar cones and centre tubes supposed to be rigid.

Make sure you lift the back of the engine onto the shock absorber before tightening the nuts on the engine bar.If you tighten them before you lift the back of the engine the rubber will be rotated and they will ware quickly.

I always use chrome plastic car tow hook covers to protect against contaminates ie petrol oil etc. had my mounts in now 15 years. still as good as new.

I tried these and ended up with chrome flakey bits all over one side of the scooter where the petrol had spoilt the cover. I must remember to find another pair that aren't chrome.

never had chrome flecks coming off at all.
did a few thou miles every year. no probs.
get good quality tow hooks and make sure they fit snuggly and dont move or spin.

>1000m!!!! I'm definitely using crap ones. Will buy SIL next time methinks, I've heard they're decent.

Before the rake of so called high end and crap unbranded mounts all we had were SIL.
They do the job adequately and have always been my choice in any type of motor. I've used UNI and found them to be good aswell.
They both seem to have the right balance of ride comfort and longevity.
SIL from Scooter Restorations or UNI from AF both about 20quid a pr.
I always use covers on the mounts with open mouth carbs aswell.
