Ok so the S1 I have just got on the road, I have serious trouble getting the panel handles clipped into place. I have to lie down on floor and compress the springs and pull them back. Basically the springs are just too strong. I don't want to do anything which might compromise the panel security (ie: risk panel coming off). I have a JB conversion on the left side which has slight adjustment but that doesn't help.

Any ideas?

Wont be the springs they are all preety much standard strength it will be the panel fit or the rear bracket , are they re made panels ?

Original panels and bracket at one side is slightly adjustable but makes no difference. Do you think I should file the curve of the bracket slightly?

Can't you shorten the springs a little to ease the pressure?

I'd be very reluctant to start trimming the brackets - they've probably worked for the last 60 years or so.

Have you checked the bar moves freely on the rod if you remove the spring if it's not then that could be the problem

Could be the rubbers on the legs, if too wide the push the panel out to much making it much harder / impossible to secure the panel arm

My s1 is the same,its very hard to put the panels on.Say you put the right hand panel on,I've found that if you put the panel on and hit it hard on the bend to make sure its on correctly and push down directly above the panel handles,turning the handle at the same time,the handle will turn easier.

Yep the bar moves freely.

It was the same before I fitted the rubbers.

Had to Google it but a very big hammer WOULD suffice, lol.

ive just rebuilt a series 2 which has the same handles, what I did to make the handle easier to turn was the split pins that hold the springs on I bent them like a c shape so the springs are not under so much tension, I then bent the end of the split pin around the opposite way to hold it in place, I also used the brass end caps which improved the job.
