Hello, looking for some advice/ideas - i have a S3 (1962) i have an issue, when i take her out for a ride from cold she rolls freely and smooth (without her running) after she had been ridden for x amount of time, and i get off her and either try to put her on the stand or roll her back or forward, she seems to act like the rear brake is on, stiff and hard to move, the pedal is fine depresses and releases as it should, the hub is hot which i presume is normal - so could it be either the break shoes binding when hot ? the cable sticking somewhere but seems fine when pedal is depressed, or a hub / bearing issue, has anyone had a similar issue. Thanks for any advice ...

The hub should only get hot if you are using the brakes a lot. Can't be sure but it does sound as though your brake shoes are rubbing. I had the same problem awhile back. Check the hub is fixed tight as well because if loose that could also cause the symptoms you describe. You should be able to run the engine when the scooter is on it's stand when you return back from a ride out and that may help identify the problem. Also look at the paintwork on the hub, it may bubble a bit if too hot.

After ur wee rideout, put scoot on stand then fit engine prop stand which should lift ur rear wheel clear of the ground and try and spin it by hand. Might be the shoes have jumped the cam but deffo hub removal will be needed for full assessment ;)

Could be worn shoes allowing cam to travel too far and then not returning keeping the shoes/brake on. Hub off and also check correct shoes to correct cam.

When you've been for a ride slacken the back brake cable until the scooter rolls backward and forward. It maybe that your back brake drum and shoes have expanded due to the heat.

went for a ride today, rear brake was locked on, so thats why the hub was hotter than expected, scoot would not roll back or forwards, took the hub off and found the cam was jamming/sticking at an angle and forcing the shoes to be in full brake mode, although the pedal sprang back up to normal position, removed the shoes found a slight grove in the shoe head so smoothed that off this probably happened due to the jammed cam, cleaned the cam pivot pins etc, put it back together and the cam no longer jammed in the on position, bonus, but the cable is in almost full adjustment, and there is plenty of meat on the shoes and the pedal is not far from the floor when pressed, i got brakes but they aint great, so next theory is, maybe the hub has been skimmed inside hence the shoes have further to travel before the touch the inside, hence the full adjustment on the cable, but a mate later said it could be the arm itself may need moving on its spindle to give a better angle, or buy jockys boxenstop kit. so think i will compare the inside of the rub with another S3 hub to see if mine is actually thinner, & have a look at the arm spindle theory, but a boxenstop kit might be a good move either way. thanks for the advice lads much appreciated.

I would suspect gp shoes with a li cam if the shoes have got plenty of meat

Also worth to adjust the cable out, undo the pedal clamp and pull the cable through a bit.

Could be that the brake shoe cam shaft is seizing in its bush. Strip out, clean and re-grease.
