I want to retain the patina on my series 2 wheels, but any suggestions on what to paint the inside of the wheels with as I want to protect the inner tube and tyre when I put the wheels back together.

I have already cleaned the insides of rust and old paint.

I would (and do ) Rattle can the inner Of the rims with any paint you have and rub them down and do them again each time you change the tyre and tube . As long as they’re smooth and free of corrosion any paint will do but I wouldn’t put it on too thick is all .

Gulp!

Am I the only one that used to build old, rusty wheels by wire brushing off the loose stuff on the inside then a liberal application of grease to emulate tyre soap? Building a wheel in that manner always ensured easy dismantling & the tyre beads always wiped away excess grease to the outside in any case. Purely for precaution, I then used to wash down the (temporarily over) inflated tyre in a bowl prior to doing the washing up......

A good brushed on coat of smooth hammerite works well.

+ 1 on that.

Get inside the rim rust free and then hammerite. If its showing any signs of failing at next tyre change then quick rub down and blast with rattle can on the affected area

Seriously ,You are not the only one to deal with inner wheel corrosion in the described manner….This method also ensures the inner tube does not get stuck to pre-painted inner rims caused by paint not given sufficient time to harden before reassembly.
I note how lucky you were when you finished, as I not only had to do the washing up,but had to Hoover ,dust the house, take the clothes to the Launderette, then come home ,cook a meal………Cor Blimey the young don’t know .etc.etc . ……………..

I've got a humongous pile of ironing to do sometime. I bought a beer kit to do a year ago & still haven't brewed that! There's just not enough hours in the day, what with plucking the infestation of nose & ear hair that gets worse each day. It's all back breaking! My Lady has it easy, by comparison, just digging the garden over...
