I'm onto the engine part of my first ever 2 wheeled restoration and need some advice please.

I've got a 1961 series 2 LI125 and the chain case cover has got a piece missing around one of the stud holes and a big bit broken off around the kickstart.

It seems series 2 LI chain case covers are quite hard to find, but I have found them available from Lambretta Works in the US.
Should I stick with original and get a series 2 one, or should I get a more readily available series 3 cover and the conversion kickstart lever? (I need a new kickstart lever and shaft anyway).
Would the series 3 be a direct replacement otherwise? I don't really want to get in over my head with compatibility issues.
I've seen to avoid GP ones as this would need a different clutch and some drilling/tapping.

If it matters, I'll probably have to change the seized cylinder, piston and head to LI150 ones, due to not being able to find a 125 barrel, but the engine will be otherwise standard.
The scooter will actually get very little use. I know this might be a bit controversial, but this will be my pride and joy display piece and I'll be getting a series 3 for going out and about on.

You should be able to find a S2 chain case cover reasonably easy, no need to buy anything from America

Before you commit to anything, let's see some photos of what you have.(Dropbox is a good host to have for all that posting images malarkey)

Chances are that a good welder will not only be able to repair what you have, but also match the colour of the alloy

Took a little while to get back into Photobucket, then gave up and tried Dropbox, but I think I'm there now

I think it may be a bit far gone for economical welding, as both the inside and outside of the kickstart tube are missing.
But here are the photo's as I'm far from an expert on this.

Where should I be looking for the series 2 covers?
I've looked on the common Lambretta spares sites, like MB and Scooter Restorations, along with eBay, but the only show the series 3 ones.
That's why I'm wondering if there was much work involved in using one of them as a backup plan.

good luck with the rebuild i reckon if you sit tight for a while a S2 case will come up. i bet there's loads on here that have got S3 motors in their S2's.

Probably the only way you might go about repairing the kickstart area is to have a sleeve made up that could fit around the damaged area once it had been welded & subsequently machined to suit. Unless you had a mate that could do all of that, I doubt it would be an economical solution

I had a S3 cover that was busted like that, but kept all of the bits & have had it welded (by a mate!) but that is as far as I have got. For me to use it again with any confidence, it would have to have a (preferably) stainless sleeve made to fit, which I can do, but the machining of the outside of the welded area is too involved for the kit I possess.

A better cover will come along, though don't throw that one away. They are good to use for racing as the lack of the recess as per S3 allows room for extended clutches. I have two like that, but they are no good to you, unfortunately.

I've a Spanish S2 side case I could part with, exactly the same as Italian it just has the strengthening lugs around the kickstart.
