Stand help

Postby IaninDorset » Mon Sep 15, 2014 1:12 am

I want to replace my rather rotty centre stand with a nice stainless steel one for my Ser 1 Li, what is replaceable and what isn't and can I use ser 3 stands and is the splash plate essential? The parts pictures and stuff really don't go too well close enough for close up viewing on my PC.

One of the flat plates is welded on, the other... er isn't, the curve plates are intact but just really coated in Leyland Rouge but I can probably electro bath the removable plates but the bolts are mush and having some issues removing the big 10 mm bolt that goes from plate to strut.

Think I have done well, now only needing legshield and side panels to complete, this was supposed to be a year long project but I kind of got it all in a month hehe Quite surprised at how much Ser 1 stuff is still out there, this motor is like twice the age of my T5 and there is more out there for this than a MKI T5 specific parts wise :) I'm not going to carry on with the frame breather side of it and going to put a K&N filter on to a elbow.

Colour wise I have decided I am going to go with a burnished and flatter copper finish then loadsa clearcoats, I bought a load to do my T5 with but changed me mind so got lots of paint lurking about and its a really nice shiny copper too which will be for the main panels and the finishers will be in the contrasting duller finish and pick out bits with gold or brass finish, I reckon it will look spot on :)

The S1/S" is wider than the S3 stand and if you buy one don't go for an ebay item from the far east as they very often have the stop lugs welded at the wrong angle  The plate you refer to as being welded is probably a reinforcing plate, I'm not sure if they were ever welded atb the factory but may well have been since the repair a cracked strut. The splash plate is important by the way.

My series 1 has two oblong plates welded to the strut forming a right angle to the flat face of the strut. The round bar of the stand sits in that right angle with the s shaped brackets sandwiching the stand. Its all metal on metal and grinds away over the years getting sloppy. I ran a couple of beads of weld along the strut to fill in the worn dent and ground it flat. The fixed plates looked spot welded to the strut and these were also bent. I reshaped and ran weld on the inside to stiffen them up. Last and not least the s shaped plates??? I bought 2 sets and none were anything like the originals, too thin or the wrong shape/size so no holes lined up. I reworked the originals in the end. The splash plate was a stainless far east one and the only thing that fitted. The stand is a bit stiff and needs a kick to return but when its worn for 40 years it will be fine

Not sure how good the original stand really is as I straightened it out but it the legs are pretty rusty tbh and one of the lugs on the centre bit is fairly rotten and I thought a nice clean SS one would make a nice difference.

It is only one straight plate, one shaped plate per side? I take it the splashguard bolts to these plates or does it bolt to the struts?

Thx for the info on size difference, might see if AF have got any as they got some nice priced stuff.

The splash plate bolts trough the strut and is held by the 2 big bolts.

I dont know if the series 1 has 2 types of stand fixing but mine has the 4 small bolts per side and the s shape plates like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Splash-Plate- ... 5d4f8bb7b5
The splash guard has 4 holes and it bolts to the vertical plate welded to the strut

Yes, I have two plates, two straights with a central 10mm hole and two 5mm holes and two S shaped plates.

Is that all that holds the stand in place?

Might grab that splashplate hehe I done business with that ebayer before as they got me my LML engine :) Looks quite a nice splashplate.
