Disc brake joining nut

Postby Bobblybob » Wed Jan 27, 2021 1:26 am

Hi all
How tight do I do up the half nut that is put on the shaft that in effect holds the two halves of the disc brake together? Tighten then slacken off or what? Thanks

I've just built 2 and simply tightened them up. I'm not sure why you'd need to slacken off. Is the hub locking up or something?

also, worth looking at this https://restoringlambrettas.blogspot.com/

Thanks. Just nervous about over tightening as it seems to bind if I tighten right up

it shouldn't bind up. Probably a good idea to strip and rebuild and follow the rebuild guide from Paul Slack.

I'm just guessing here, but if it's binding up, maybe you've missed a spacer out?

Looking at what you recommend I may have not put the inner bearing in far enough. Will strip again and have a look.

As dickie suggested, the spacer tube is essential as that ensures just the correct amount of axial clearance remains in the deep groove ball bearings with no pre-loading.

If either bearing was not fully seated, then if you're sure of the rest of the build :? you could continue tightening to pull either fully home.......

I'm guessing, but best strip down again, eh?

Partially Stripped it down again this evening. Inner bearing wasn’t fully seated in. Couple of taps with a no.3 persuader , refitted oil seal and good as gold. Thanks. 8-)
