Fuel sender ideas

Postby Brucie » Sun Feb 21, 2021 6:47 pm

Looking for some advice.
Looking to fit a fuel sender to either a standard or mid range tank. Something like. As said only something like. Not necessarily this.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vespa-PX-LML ... Swx3VeLchh

Am wondering due to curved surface on these tanks is it feasible using riv nuts or does it need to be welded to avoid fuel spilling out where the fuel sender is fitted.

Any other ideas much appreciated.

Cheers Bruce

If you look at late indian tanks they have a flat square behind the filler cap to locate a sender. On the sender unit I would look at the ones that have the plunger in a tube than the ones with the wire arm.

I actually like the look of that, I fitted a universal gauge of ebay to my long range tank which works but requred a bit of faffing to get it to fit as the bit that goes into the tank needs shortening. It came ith a sealing ring and gasket but that leaked so I glued the flange on with JB Weld which worked. he first one kept getting stuck so its currently on the 2nd one but they are only about £10 including the gague.

The tube type are too tall I think, I have a spare GTS one thats at least an inch to tall

As coaster suggests, there is quite a choice of complete kits on eBay of Chinese origin. The actual selection comes down to what may, or be made, to fit the tank & what dial you select. I have a kit to fit & found a white faced dial that just indicates 'E' to 'F' with graduations so that will do for me. I intend to fit via DIY matching inner nut plate or blind nutserts & good gasketting. It can't be any more difficult to seal than a TS inlet manifold....

VDO & others make the vertical tube type sender in a range of heights but, for me, the cost is prohibitive.

You could talk to Paul at Oiltek because I think he knows a bit about senders as they can be fitted to his tanks

Be careful !! I used a gauge from one company and the sender from another.

Unfortunately the gauge works arse about tit

Empty is full and full is empty. The gauge has a LED scale and TBH when you get used to it it works quite well.

The sender is the tube type with a "donut" round it......i used to have the lever type but all the nuts and bolts came loose inside the tank :(

I used rivnuts with a nice thick rubber washer and no leaks.

I used a sender from a Kawasaki it only needed a hole about 25 - 28mm enough to get the float through. The float and arm ran across the tank. The plate was square and had a screw in each corner. Used rivnuts and some silicon rubber never leaked.
