Rimini have the original style type tad pricey though

Having read Dicks book, being in possession of the blue & white 'bretta manual & saving a small fortune due to what were going through (at the expense of the Elmers Arms, best pub in Bristol ) I'm able to finally fill the gaps in my toolkit.

Absolutely nowt wrong with the flat type (apart from the price, for nothing), will knock one up at work & NOT! (dunno how I got away with it this long...) twist the crank

I have seen photos of this tool before, but I just can’t work out how it is used.

Presumably it is a con-rod holding tool rather than a crank holding tool.

Perhaps I lack imagination, but it has me stumped.

(I sit back and prepare myself for a “Doh! It really is THAT obvious” moment)

I asked the question why is it better than the flat plate version but received no response. Looking at them, the alternative tool, the conrod goes through the hole and locks as the crank turns. This does not stress the big end bearing. I maybe completely wrong as usual!

I've used my slotted plate type on a lot of engine builds & the only advantage I can see to spending more than the fiver mine cost is that the pan handle type won't ring like a tuning fork if you put it down carelessly......

There must be a lot of money about despite the economy....

I stick the handle of a small screwdriver in the slot between the two webs. As the big-end comes around, the handle stops the crank rotating. It puts no stress on the big-end bearing.

I have the slotted tool described elsewhere, but prefer my trusty screwdriver.

the 'pan handle' holder works a treat on SX or GP cranks as the con-rod locks onto the holder, but you struggle with a full circle crank

Same here Martin and if the piston is in place I've used the plastic coated handles of a pair of pliers under the skirt.....probably not best practice though
