The front brake on my Series 2 works ok but pulses at low speed. I am assuming it is oval and from what I have read probably not worth fixing. There seem to be quite a few different options available, I would like to retain a period (ish) look so have ruled out external discs. The engine is currently standard, at some point I intend to fit a kit to improve mid-range rather than top-end.
- New un-branded front hub £35
- New Uni front hub £80
- New cable operated internal disc for drum links, made in India These seem to vary on price quite a lot is there any variation in quality ?
- New Italian cable operated internal disc - £800+ out of my budget.
- Reworked/secondhand TV hub, this would need new links - £500-600

I am leaning towards a new Uni hub as I am not sure of the quality of the Indian internal disc hubs, does anyone have any experience of these ?

There are so many Lambrettas now running hydraulic front disc set-ups that a secondhand front hub of the later, stronger type ought to be available by listing in the 'Wanted' section.

That said, I would never run without front dampers, so upgraded links are the best solution. TV175 II/Serveta drum brakes are very good in reverse pull configuration.....

As previous suggested - just get a replacement original hub from a S3.

There's loads knocking around - they are more or less worthless unless its for a TV2.

One thing I definitely would advise against is a remade cable disc brake. Worse than a standard drum or even just sticking your legs out as a wind brake.

I've got a complete s3 drum that I don't need. Needs bearings, seals etc.

If you know someone with a lathe, just getting it skimmed would make a world of difference. My mate skimmed a rear hub for me once and it was without doubt, the best rear brake I've ever used .....on a lambretta.

I have an early series 2 front hub. I have just bought the strengthened Uni back plate and propose to get the hub itself skimmed on a lathe, as has been said before.

Thanks for the response. I will stick with a drum for the time being, on closer inspection mine is a S3 hub. I have found a series 2 which I will refurb with new bearings etc and get the liner skimmed.

The Series 3 has a strengthened back plate. If I was in your shoes, I’d keep the Series 3 hub but just get it skimmed.

By backplate do you mean the plate the shoes attach to ?. If so I was planning to keep the one I have and use it with the S2 Hub. I was, perhaps naively, assuming they were the same size etc.

Yes, I mean the backplate that the shoes attach to. That’s what is strengthening on a series 3

Later s2 backplates are also strengthened. I bought an s3 backplate for my s2, but when I went to replace it, I found that it had the thicker gusset cast in, as on s3. It's in original paint, so I'd be astonished if someone had done this after leaving the factory

I stand corrected, Sticky’s manual says it was early S1 back plates that were weak, not Series 2. That said, I have a Series 2, an early one, that has the weak spine. Whether it is original to the scooter, I really don’t know.

It's S1 and early S2 that have the weak ones so probably original Paul.
