Guys -- got 40 miles from home and scooter started to misfire intermittently, ran OK for a few miles and then misfiring again .. cdi, lead, cap were all changed out ... when travelling at decent speed what does a stator breaking down actually feel like?

Total breakdown or misfiring that bad it can't be ridden............or somewhere in between.

I would suggest the stator (low tension coil or pick up) could be at fault, but it could also be a fuel issue, flywheel damaged, mag side bearing (causing intermittent pick up issues), or something else

Hi Mick, I could ride it, managed 40 odd mile to get home at decent speed, just spluttering and coughing as we went. Kicked it over this morning and sounds good with decent compression.

You can try testing the pick up and coil with a resistance meter but to be honest this is a bit hit and miss with different manufacturers having different readings. Sticky's gives a bit of info' about this. The easiest way (sort of) is to replace with a known good stator (and re-time).

I don't think it's a top end issue and the stator would be favourite, but never rule out something obscure or obvious (have you changed the plug !).....dodgy fuel is another one for the "well who'd have thought it was that" list.

Will do Mick, that stator only went in a couple of years ago and it was a BGM ... i'll do the usual 1st .... wee leak down test wont go amiss too -- G

Usually mis fires etc. like you describe and the pick up.

The LT coil is usually when it gets hot just stops working til it cools down then it will start again. (until it gets hot again)

got into it today -- plug ok, it runs rich anyways, checked the carb today, float was not stuck but the carb had moved round a bit on the inlet and more of an angle than usual, maybe enough to cause fuel starvation of stick the float -- lets see and i'll report back - G
