So... This may well be misremembering, apologies in advance! Did a drum brake exist that had a disc brake fitting, i.e. entailing disc brake links?!

I think the tv series 1 and 2 did. A grown up will be along soon to confirm this soon.

Yes, the series 1 and some series 2 fork links had a three point fitting and therefore the fork links are compatible with the Innocenti disc brake.
Needless to say, Innocenti moved to the two point fixing when the bean counters worked out it was cheaper to produce.

Correct, TV 1 & 2 drum hubs have the same link and back plate arrangement as a TV 3 disc. The 1 & 2 LI drums and links are basically the same design as S3 drum but the early ones have a much weaker recess for the link stub, which can break and lock the spinning hub as the cables wrap tight.
If you have a look in Sticky's manual, or other, you can see photos of the various components.

The S1 and S2 links of that sort don’t have exactly the same geometry as the S3 disc links, so not a like-for-like swap.

I put the Series 1/2 TV back plates and links on my S1 and S2 Lis as an upgrade and they are probably the best front brakes Innocenti made. I really rate them.

Apart from the fork links what else could be making the difference?

Yep, the angle and travel of the 1 & 2 is slightly different... for the better. Indeed, Dave Webster recommended fitting the TV 1& 2 links as the provided the best handling for race bikes.
This is in the Webster performance manual, should you wish to read more.

I think the fact the brake plate is secured with a nut to the link as opposed to a stub like the normal LI brakes.
Initially I only had some s3 disc links in the S1 and the front always felt a bit vague on the initial tipping into the turns. Eventually I acquired some S1/2 type and fitted them and found the front to be much better.
