How to check pick up alignment with flywheel

Postby Granty » Fri Jan 06, 2023 11:49 pm

Guys - fault finding just now, i have a relatively new BGM stator with a long fin Indian flywheel ... how do i see or check the alignment of the stator pick up with the flywheel magnets?

Cheers, G.

If I remember correctly the BGM stator comes with shims to alter the pick up height

Remove the flywheel
Put a ball of blu-tac on the stator pick up coil
Fit the flywheel at the correct torque
Remove the flywheel
The blue-tac will be squashed
Use verniers to measure the squashed blu-tac
This measurement represents the gap between the stator and flywheel
Use shims to raise the stator- suggest half way initially
Reassemble and retest
Repeat as required

Worked for me hope this helps

Thank Sticky for this tip

Got it and thanks for the info -- do i just make sure that both metal strips on the pick up are central to the magnets on the flywheel? Is that what i'm making sure off?

bit of an update, got into it on Sunday, BGM stator pick up looked like it was really low and just catching the magnets on the SIL flywheel. I raised the pickup by 2 shims. Scooter now revs out like its never done, just need to check the timing again tomorrow and shakedown ... fingers crossed and thanks for the advice to date. G

managed to check the timing today after lifting the pick up ... was miles out, probably up at 21+* before TDC ..... got it to 17* and rock solid up and down the revs ... maybe get a shakedown ride tomorrow, need to check my other one, it has the same set up with BMG stator & indian flywheel!!

I have looked high and low for the measurement of the squashed bluetack / plastercine between the flywheel and the pick up with no luck.
Greatly appreciate if anyone can enlighten me.
I read somewhere about marking the side of the pick up in line with the two pick ups and then the two magnet ears on the flywheel then looking through the window of the flywheel to see how well the two line up.
Thanks

Hi -- i used this method to measure the height of the pick up ....https://www.allstyles-scooters.com/acat ... ation.html

it now sits at 9.5mm, i had to put 3 shims in to get it to that height. Hope this helps. G

Shakedown complete and issue solved, scoot revs out and spluttering stopped. Only issue now is at full reeves the speedo light goes out, back to 3/4 throttle and light comes back on.
