Hiya, just finished a gearbox rebuild - all went well however I used one of MB's longer endplate stud gearbox kits. The longer end went into the cases lovely and its nice to have the extra support in the ally however the shorter length side protrudes over the nut (after torqueing up) about 3mm. Worried that its going to catch my chain - could I get around the problem by using a bigger shim under the clutch basket/spider? cheers Paul

If the shim under clutch bell is the correct thickness then you will have good lateral alignment between the clutch and drive sprockets. So, clearly, if you change this shim you will upset that alignment!
There is no point in having any thread extending beyond the nut as it serves no useful purpose. If it looks like the stud end could contact the chain then they need shortening by an appropriate amount to gain the necessary clearance.
