asking for a mate


So I want to run pathfinders using the old LI s3 light switch, as discussed on the original magazine article.

You know the one.

I'd like to know how to modify the LI switch so that it works. Currently, the hi-lo beam switch (red and blue wires) is triggered when the rocker switch is in the far right position. When the rocker is in the middle it triggers a feed to the side light (yellow wire). Ideally I'd like to use the GP ign switch to fire the hi-lo beam, and the rocker to turn on the fog (at middle position) and spot on far right.

The switch has a black wire, a brown, a purple (to rear light?) yellow, red and blue.

There must be a simple-ish bit of wiring modification that allows this to work. I think Rimini do a conversion but it's very expensive and must surely be do it yourself-able

Any budding bright sparks out there know how to do it?

i used a series 3 battery model switch on mine,i think thats what you need , wiring is slightly different , cant remember exactly what i did it was a while ago, ill see if i have any pics, it was trial and error , i seem to do that a lot.

Firstly you'll need a battery.... but I guess you know that....

The switch may have an issue with handling the current of the lights, so I would use the output of the switch that would have done to the headlamp bulb previously to switch a relay that activates your lights. One relay for each pathfinder.



connect the output from the switch to pin 86, and connect your Pathfinder to Pin 87......

Im presuming you have already transfered your lights to an ignition switch and now have a redundant handlebar light switch. If so the easiest way would be simply to put a relay on the end of the blue and red with the other side to ground. The relay will switch whatever you want to hang on it with the load coming from a battery on the switched side

I would use a relay any time you are hanging a big load as italian switches are not that good

It's do-able with your switch gear but as said, probably best done through a couple of relays, because the switchgear and its low amperage wire is likely to be at its limit handling 50+ watts.
You could simplify your wiring a little by linking the main beam feed with another wire connected to a relay, this used to trigger your battery power via the relay direct to the spot light, it will also help simplify the wiring to the fog light as its using your existing dip dazzle switch, so now you would only need one terminal from the spare feeds from the LI switch gear to another relay for the fog light.

This way it would leave you with an independent fog light and a spotlight that's linked to the main beam.
It might not be what you were thinking of.
But when I've needed the spotlight it's always been because I'm on a dark unlit road, my reasoning for linking the spot and main beam is the Spotlight has a very bright but concentrated beam so on its own I don't think its good enough to light up a wide enough area, but combined with the main beam it's very effective.

I could be wrong but I think the OP is asking how the switch will need to be modified? I would assume the Li switch allows for Off - Side Lights - Headlights (with side lights?) if so, some wiring or switch re-configuration will be needed?

Just guessing, I've only fiddled with the rocker to make indicators work.

The LI switch should allow for side lights on or main beam lights on or all lights off. But I don't think the side lights should come on with the main beam using a standard li trapazoidal switch.

That was my point the Li switch doesn't need modification with an added ignition block, it just needs power in and power out on the spare wire that originally fed the side lights from the Handle bar switch that's used to switch between side lights and main beam. As said "This is with the addition of an ignition block" .
This is what frees up the spare side of the handlebar light switch (Purple and yellow wires) The added ignition block can feed the black wires so there's no need for this wire to be used from the light switch.

It's a very easy conversion to do using what already there without much added except for the relays and linking feeds to and from the switch (on existing wires) and the additional wires to and from the battery to lights.

I might be making it sound easy but it's somthing ive done before using relays pathfinders and existing switch gear.

Good point about wiring the spot to come on with the main beam, I think it is a legal requirement for spots to ONLY work when the main beam is on...Never had that questioned on an mot though

Hope you don't mind ...Sorry if I'm hijacking this.....but im looking at doing this in the future.....still to get a lot more parts yet. and I've noticed there's a 9 wire LI switch and a 7 wire Li switch....any advantage of either?.. My SX is original 6 volt set up with battery... but converted to 12 volt no battery still with original ignition switch ...Appreciate I'll need a battery ..

Byron did mine, might be worth dropping him a pm, but with mine the ignition positions are off - main beam - main beam & spots (no side light, who needs that anyway?) and the rocker on the Li Switch is spot - spot & fog - fog
