Stator plate fault

has anyone ever had a dodgy stator plate that makes the engine splutter when on full revs,like the main jet is way out?is it a fault with the pick up?have gone from a 124 to a 164 main jet and no difference.am running a 230 mugello with a 28mm phbh dellorto through an lth reedblock and a jl3 pipe.any advice gratefully received!

All the pick ups I've replaced worked at low speeds but wouldn't let the scoot rev out, felt like the choke was turned on and wouldn't go past 30-40 mph in 4th.

Yes just like wack says it feels like the choke is on when you try to increase engine revs, and if you put a strobe on an engine which has a stator with a failing pickup it's easy to see why as the timing mark jumps about which makes it impossible to rev the engine cleanly.
When it's a failing LT coil, it tends to make it hard to start as the spark voltage is reduced but the timing mark remains steady when strobed.

IF it is stator it could well be the rivets have come loose, that would give similar symptoms.

F.W.I.W, If your going to solder a new pick up on. be quick they don't seem to like a lot of heat and will give the same symptoms you describe.

Thanks for that,thats exactly what im getting now!got a new bgm regulator on its way and will go get a stator plate later,hopefully that should sort it!?

That what they do when a diode that's wired up inside the pickup fails.

That's true they can give very similar symptoms, only difference is it usually starts easy enough when the pickup fails, but when it's a loose rivet (causing a bad earth) then starting the engine is usually more difficult. And a multi meter shows the added impedance of the loose rivet, where a failing pick up will often show no faults with the normal SIL 93-95 Ohms, or Italian/BGM 112-120 Ohms impedance approx.

Thanks pugwash,engine starts fine its just high up the rev band that the problems start.got a new stator today with a copper heatsink fitted round the coil,hopefully should cure the problem!?

You say that but my mates stator plate had these symptoms from half way to, and all the way back from the IOW this year, rivets were loose, new stator plate and all sorted.

No your are right it could be this and I don't disagree, as I said "they can give very similar symptoms", so you could be right when the stator comes off it might show itself to have loose rivets.

I've had similar problems with Stator Plates over the last couple of seasons. Each time I've found it was the LT Coil at fault and not the Pick Up Coil.
I've recently purchased new Stator Plates from a well known reliable manufacturer (not fair to name here IMO) and found the LT Coil failed after a very short time.
I've proved this by tranfering the Pick Up Coil from the same Stator on an Indian Stator plate and the Scooter ran fine.
Multi Meter readings confirmed my diagnosis too, with the Pick Up Coil reading 112 Ohms and the LT Coil reading infinity.
I'm currently in dialogue with the manufacturer regarding this issue.
Will keep posted.
