who makes headlight rims?

Postby jaybee » Thu May 30, 2024 11:35 am

I am something of a newbie, assembling a 1963 li 125 s2 from parts, and there will be further posts which will reveal my ingorance. all help welcome.

I have an unusual headset top for s2 (i'm told its for a TV) which has the pre-drilled headlight rim holes about 3mm off from where the holes are on the rim itself.

i am either faced with drilling new holes, and having to somehow cover up the standard ones, or i need to find someone who manufactures the rims, so i can get one without holes and drill them to measure myself.
Scootopia say they make them but dont have any and are not planning to get any in.

Can anyone suggest another manufacturer?
cheers
John

Casa Lambretta make a headlight rim for Series 2. As far as I know, it’ll fit LI and TV.

Are you perhaps mixing up Series 2 and Series 3 parts (if your scooter was manufactured in 1963, it is highly likely to be a series 3) ? Or, have you maybe put it on upside down?

A picture would help but you’ll need to use a hosting site to put a picture on this forum.

This is an original rim on a 1960 Series 2, if that helps.

Well, I was told it was a S2, but it is weird that the S2 rims don't fit (I have tried 3 already)
Maybe it is time to try a s3 rim.

Importantly, my hole is 15mm from the bottom of the headset top.(I think most s2s are just over 18)
I'll look into the picture uploads.
Thanks for your help

Just a thought.
If your parts are from different sources...... There could well be some differences between what was made in Italy, to what was made in Spain and India?????????

What shape is the speedo? That will tell you if it's a S2 or a S3

speedo is circular. a s3 rim doesnt fit either.

i am starting to wonder if it is Indian, good shout fastnfurious. it is stamped innocenti with serial number 19-26-1004. would Indian ones have those markings?

i havent been able to source a handlebar clutch housing shim to fit, and have ordered an indian one which claims to be bigger. so maybe it is indian.

i think i'll try one of those next. it would be a shame to have to drill new holes.

Ive got an API Indian S2 headset, came from SR. Its stamped API.
Bought a cheap and cheerful S2 rim. No issues with fitting.

From memory i just bought a S2 gear selector/shroud.

Well, my Indian and Italian clutch housing shims also don't fit, and given the headlights don't fit, I'm starting to wonder what unique piece of kit I happen to have acquired.

Have cut down an Indian shim to fit mine. As for the headlight, I could drill my own holes if only I could find a rim with out any predrilled holes.

I have had Indian GP headsets that have same number as Italian also remade from wherever ones stamped with same number and Innocenti stamp. Indian ones fine but remade was a nightmare to find a rim. Gave up in end. I think proper Italian parts have CP in a circle stamped on them. Someone will hopefully correct me if wrong

Gizmo,
thanks. did you just drill new holes in the rim and cover the old ones? (and if so how?)
(alternative seems to be drill new helicoils into headset which must be a nightmare.)

I just found an original rim that fitted. You shouldn't be having to alter headset . It's a bit different with GP ones which I needed as they are not ( or shouldn't be) to much variation in size. Always found scootopia and casa ones tight but holes never out. Are you near any scooter shops so you could take it in and try some on it. Elsewhere Swiss Tony scooter parts has massive stocks. Could give him a ring or send him a photo with some measurements.

Gizmo. Cheers . I seem to be miles away from any Lambretta garages nearest being 40 mins drive .
But i think that's a good idea. I'll try Swiss Tony. Drew a blank with Cambridge Lambretta.

Here is a link to a pic showing the 15mm gap from hole to headset edge. Cambridge Lambretta told me they measured an S2 at 18.5mm.
http://youtube.com/post/UgkxSOGTfcwdO4Z ... p2ZpBWK9vv
so that's my 7mm or 8mm gap

also here is a video of the gap with the rim involved.
