Just fitted two new bearings - a Koyo on the drive side and one of those brass caged Scootopia bearings on the flywheel side.

When I fitted the Koyo, no problem

The Scootopia bearing felt a little less smooth out the box tbh but I fitted anyway. Now I've added mag housing and turned the crank by hand it still feels like there's a rumble? Maybe this is because it's a roller bearing and supports more load

Can anyone tell me if this is normal or should I be worried?

I would advise you to speak to Scootopia about this as, in all fairness, the rest of us can only speculate.

Having said that, for the large bearing manufacturers such as FAG, Kohl, SKF etc, there will be a factory somewhere in the world producing roller bearings for all the major manufacturers whilst other factories will specialise in bearings of another type.

Whichever bearing is produced will be marked up according to the manufacturer's logo & specification. It's all to do with economies of scale. A lot like Weetabix producing wheat cereal biscuits for the Supermarkets.

What surprised me is that any bearing manufacturer would choose to use brass as a cage for this type of bearing. The reason that metal cages have tended to fall out of favour is that moulded cages allow for greater ' crowding' of the rolling elements. That is, more rollers can be fitted thus increasing the load capacity.

However, as we all must surely know by now, plastic caged ball bearing types should not be used in the rear hub bearings as that is a critical safety issue

After going back to it and putting a couple of drops of oil on the big end it seemed better so maybe it just needs running for a while? Anyway I've decided its staying in there now so ill let you know the outcome
