Ferrules or No ferrules

Do you fit a set of ferrules (top hat) onto the clutch and front brake cables at the lever end in the headset or do you just set the cables against the slot in the headset .

just in the slots. doubt if a top hat of any kind would fit.

Just for the record, Lambretta outer control cables always have a ferrule fitted at either end. If the slotted housings at the headset are too tight to allow the ferrules to fit, they can be - carefully! - widened by a screwdriver prising open the slot to suit.
