Mec-eur Speedo Cables

These used to be the go-to speedo cables. The last mec-eur cable I bought has an alloy square drive pressed onto the cable, instead of the inner cable machined square with a brass bush fitted.

The alloy drive bush arrangement maybe marks a reduction in manufacturing costs, but for the user it’s a weak link that’s waiting to fail.
Last cable with the pressed alloy drive lasted to the end of the road before the pressed alloy drive became detached from the main cable. Useless.

What’s the BGM speedo cable like. Is it another alloy drive pressed onto the main cable?

I’d never realised that there were different versions so your post prompted me to go and have a look at some of my spares (used and unused).



The one in the bag is MEC/EUR. I think it predates the pandemic and it is, as you say, a complete pressed in end. The one on the right is a used one and has the shaped cable end. Sadly, I have no recollection as to where this came from.

I can’t ask your question but I suspect quite a few of us share your pain in trying to achieve a functioning speedometer.

Here's the new style mec-eur with the alloy drive that drops off the cable. Lasted to the end of the road and mine failed

Instead bought a BGM cable which is much better quality using the traditional square drive machined in the cable, and no alloy drive arrangement to fail in no time at all
