I was reading a topic in Jetset about the SIP speedo and rev counter and was surprised to see that at 50mph the revs measured 2100.
With a 185 engine, standard series 2 exhaust and 25ml carb my rev counter at 50mph reads about 5000 and at idle about 1000 revs, are my readings completely wrong.

Nope. I read it as well. Got his numbers very wrong.

The whole thing reads just like an advert for SIP, I hope they paid handsomely for it. I've chucked the mag away now, but I've a feeling that the publishers didn't even bother editing SIP's mistakes out of the copy they clearly submitted themselves. Doesn't it mention something about the speedo being for Vespas somewhere in the "article"?

There's another article in the latest Jetset which has somebody else's bad experience with it...

I think that's the one being discussed in this thread

I think at 2100 rpm for 50mph, he'd have to have about 2.2 final gearing

He will have around 2.2 final drive , as hes measured the circumference of his wheel as 3160mm ????? that equates to a wheel diameter of around 1000mm

It should work out at around 10mph per 1000rpm, depending on final drive and tyre size

BTW, I'm not bashing the SIP speedo, in fact I've got one which I'm waiting to fit. Just couldn't help but notice the "advertorial" nature of the original speedo article in the mag. But I apologise, that's going away from the original topic, which just sounds like a genuine typo.

quite clear to me he doesn't have a resistor type plug fitted either (or didn't initially) and I'm guessing that was his main issue.

Wow, someone's got the wrong end of the stick I think!

The mag's great, just that one article read like an advertorial, which I'm certain it was. If it was written by an LCGB member, I don't think it would mention Vespa. I think it was lifted straight from SIP's blurb, and SIP/LCGB forgot to change one of the references to Vespa (for which the speedo was originally made, and the article written presumably).

Thanks for the replys, apart from the criticism and grumbles am I to assume that my rev counter which does measure approx. 1000 revs per 10mph is correct.?

+ or - a little bit depending on gearing.
Use the excellent gearing calculator available on the net.
10.2mph/1000 revs at 4.9:1 with my 400x10 tyre on my scoot and about 9.8 with 350 x 10 at about 5.2:1

The 'advertorial' you mention from issue 191 is exactly that, and I had hoped that with the opening lines of:

" The guys at SIP have kindly sent us for your perusal some information about the SIP speedo range, so hopefully a few questions, that some may have, will be answered here."

people would be able to work it out that this was written by the SIP team and the other giveaway would be that the name at the end end of it was:

Ralf Jodl - (aka, (one of the) founders and managing director of the SIP Scootershop GmbH)

Hope this clears up any confusion for anyone, I'd also like to say thanks to Ron Wood, for his experience of the SIP speedo (Issue 192) in response to SIP's info, as it's always good to see opposing opinions.
And apologies for the error with the dirty VESPA word, oops I did it again!
in the words of my Latin tutor, Mr Hobbs “Errare humanum est.” I think Alexander Pope may have expanded on it!
