Guys -- just got my first bike with an open mouthed carb (30mm dellorto) with a ancilotti clubman and 200 lump. I've only ever had standard carbs breathing through the box.
Just cant seem to get the thing started quickly when cold -- it fires up eventually but after many, many kicks, fuel on & off, choke on & off, me on & off -- just wondering of anyone has any "Inside info" on getting this s2 lump of mine started when cold?
Cheers - Granty

I agree with Dave, I learnt the hard way back in 1971. It always started with a bump start with the throttle closed !!

Check your choke and jet sizes. had a too small choke on one carb' and had to cover mouth to start it. Also check if the choke cable is lifting the plunger ok (you can see it moving through a small hole in the side).

For that set up, you want to be looking at a choke size between 50-70. I've two 30PHBH carbs and both have 70 choke jets in and start fairly easy. But as others have said, do not apply any throttle when starting.

Thanks Mick -- where do I look exactly to see the plunger moving? Cheers G

no choke, stick a hand or rag over the carb mouth and kick.

Look inside the carb' opening and there is a small hole to the left hand side. It's below where the choke cable enters the carb'. You don't need much movement but the plunger has to lift.

It could also be just that it is cold and the choke jet is a bit small, I have trouble starting my TS1 with the choke but it fires up straight away using Scooterlam's hand over the carb mouth method. I really should get round to changing the jet
