Cleaning

Now don`t laugh, this is a serious question that doesn`t seem to be mentioned anywhere & I guess everyone has a favourite (?) way of going about it - I`ve always hated cleaning cars etc & over the last few years I`ve tried to only ride my Series 2 175 in the summer to keep it in good order underneath. Recently, I have been clocking up some miles running in a new top end & the underside is now shamefully filthy, as the roads are in a bit of a state round here.
The question is, what`s the best way to remove a sticky black gritty mixture of mud, grease & Waxoil & are there any good soft brushes on the market that wont damage painwork? I`ve even been eyeing up our round plastic loo brush & wondered if I should buy one to try it. ;) (come on, you didn`t think I would use the old one & put it back covered in oil & grease did you? I don`t think my wife would see the funny side of that!)
So, is it best to use Gunk or similar if you can still buy it & then re-treat the underside with Waxoil, or is there a better solution than to spray thick Waxoil onto the vulnerable areas?
Is it best to lay the scoot over rather than try to stand on your head to get to it?
The year round scooterists out there must have found a good & simple way of keeping their pride & joy sparkling underneath, so can you be persuaded to pass on your best tips please?
