G P 200 electrical problem

Hi i need some help with my missing spark please!

200 dl all original 6v points. usually starts second kick and runs good.

Problem started on the Sunday club ride out, after about 20 miles we stopped for a few minutes as one of the club members had a problem,
when i tried to start it wouldn' t fire up and we had to bump it.
After another 5 miles we had to stop again club members problem was ongoing, this time i decided to leave the scooter ticking over for a few minutes as it was a problem to start
and it just stopped.
Tried to kick start and bump start but it would't fire up.
Fitted new plug and cap, started first kick.
Ran for another 15 miles between 30 to 50 mph slowed at lights and in slow traffic scoot just cut out.
Checked and couldn't find a spark, tried another plug refitted plug cap still no spark.
Had to get recovered home.
Following morning i thought i would try it and it started second kick.

Any ideas to find cause of the problem?

Sounds like a condenser failing. When it cools they're fine again for a while. Changing the cap possibly had nothing to do with it other than to allow it to cool down. Easy job to replace.

Are the lights dim when the engines running? If they are then the flywheel might need re-magnetising.

Could be the condenser failing, if it is you will see sparks at the points, this is if you look in through the flywheel openings when the engines running (you would need to remove the cowling and dust cover first) start the scooter and look through to the points.

Or it could be the points gap closing up because the points heel is wearing out, you would need to adjust the points and oil the felt pad.

Or it could be dirty points, this is where a multi meter would be useful as the impedance with the points closed would be higher than 0.1 ohm.

Could be the HT coil failing, just swap it for a known working one.

Could be any of a few other things causing it, but to check all of the above would take maybe an hour, two at the most.

Thanks for your replys and advice.

I checked points 100 miles ago and they were good ,no pitting or wear also checked timing.

Will change condenser and coil next, and post results.

Hi Mark.

I have started scoot up looked at points and there was little sparks.

i removed the condenser and fitted a new one, then started scoot up again, the sparks are much bigger and brighter than before.

they are now jumping about from points to condenser!

have you any ideas please
