Hi all I painted my scooter mat black with rattle cans, but when petrol or thinners touch it looks a mess, it even marks when I touch it, is there anything I can get to spray over my scooter to stop this happening.
Cheers

You can buy petrol resistant lacquer from a number of places and this does stop the problem of the petrol melting/marking. Halfords sell it, as does my local motorist discount. I use it on rattle can sprayed petrol tanks any/or and other areas that'll come into contact with petrol... just about everything if you plan to run an open mouthed carb! I even spray the area of arch around the petrol flap as it is pretty common to drip a bit when filling up. I didn't spray my panels and they now show marks, which I like to think of as patina

Patina, I like that Adam
I think the petrol resistant lacquer is your only option but the panels sprayed with it are going to be glossy unfortunately

another thing even though the temptation will be hard to ignore don't try and wipe it dry as this makes a hell of a mess and if you use paper towel it sticks. halfords sell petrol resistant laquer and also I used a square of thick cloth with a hole in the middle to put over the the frame to soak up any drips

Yes, I found that out to my cost a few years ago just after I'd put spray can acrylic lacquer on my new 2 tone paint job, fuel overflowed onto the panel so grabbed some paper towel to mop it off the panel only to find blue paint on the towel. That meant it had eaten through the lacquer in a matter of seconds

Still as Adam says, it's just 'patina'

Dave the Paint is very good for some things but not near petrol unless you put lacquer over it. I bought this lacquer, I will let you know how it goes.

I think the biggest mistake I made as I don’t think I gave the paint enough time to cure, as the paint is very good worth a pound, I have used it for doing the sills on my campervan, and on my trailer wheels, I am sure it will be ok with the lacquer. The scooter looks good mat black, I am very happy with it.

If you are happy with it that all that matters.I am sure it will be fine with the laquer, but if its a gloss then it will loose its matt finish.
Got any pics you an post?
Dave.

Might prove useful to know - I did a cutdown last winter and sprayed it with Halfords satin black, it came out ok (well I think it did!) and the spitback out of the carb just wipes off no problem. Very little difference between satin and matt imo and the satin seems to be petrol proof.

The mat and satin black from pound land, or is it pound world I get them mixed up, it is really good paint, and it goes on a treat, What can you buy for a pound these days. Just waiting on the lacquer to finish the job off
