I have just started stripping my Li 125 engine rady for a rebuild. I am starting a shopping list for all new bearings etc, would the following setup be ok for a mild upgrade from standard and to give me a good base to improve things as money allows.

Mec GP race crank 58mm Stoke, 107mm conrod
175 conversion kit (would alloy or iron head be better option)
Electronic ignition
42mm ancillotti clubman
What carb would you recommend.

You'll get lots of different views on this, I'd suspect. There's no right or wrong answer.

I had a 175 Indian conversion barrel years back with an Asso piston. I didn't get the piston to bore clearance checked and, having run it in for hundreds of miles, I seized it, cleaned it up, seized again etc. My learning point from this was get the clearance properly checked.

I gave up in the end and invested in a Mugello 186. Which leads me on to the next point, you may be better saving, say, another £250 and buying, say, a GT 186

Carburettor - a Mikuni TM24 or a Dellorto PHBL25 would be good, oh, and Scootopia are having SH2/22 Dellortos remade.

If I was you (again this is only my opinion) I'd either:

(i) save for the GT186 and run it through the airbox with any of the carbs mentioned, or
(ii) get an old SX150/ GP 150 barrel and take it to a tuner who can just release a little more from the timings and who can rebore it to a 175. Then there's the question of what piston to go for .....

In the favour of the GT186 kit, there are lots of things you can do at a later date to release loads more power.

Personally i'd get the casings modified to take a standard 200 barrel. Run it as a 200 or you can kit it up with loads of options.

casing modifications and 200 barrel and piston £250 ?
