EGT/Cht Gauge

I've now fitted My Gauge had the first run after rebuild and first with a gauge.
The gauge is an analogue type and im surprised how responsive the EGT is.
Off throttle or on pilot it drops to about 400 and as the throttle opens it rises to 600 not pushed to W.O.T yet as its only three miles in.
The engine has been rebuilt but the carb jetting is the same as before slightly up on the pilot so I,m happy its safe.
I recently read that 650 is the optimum temp for fuel burning. how close do those of you that use sensors run to that figure, and how low do you run.
obviously readings will vary from set up to set up.
Also what head temps do you get. I checked mine in boiling water and it read 100 spot on.

Expect widely varying answers, the readings will vary massively depending on exactly how far the probe is inserted and exactly how far it is from the piston skirt. That's why they should only really be used to check that everything is normal on your engine. If it was previously running spot on and you haven't changed anything then you have the ideal opportunity to get to know the normal range of settings. Having said that, I think you are using a similar gauge and sensor to the one on mine and that sort of temp was what I was seeing on my Avanti. You do need to consider the readings in line with the CHT though as under some circumstances, the exhaust temp will go up and EHT go down. That is good where you have auto retard as it indicates the flame front moving towards the exhaust port and away from the piston crown.....it'll keep you amused for hours on a long run ;)

my EGT is 4" (100mm) approx from the piston on my TS1, @ 65mph it reads between 6 & 7 on the dial, then what time in the day, ie temps, sunny or rain, it can knock the temps back to 5!! but holed a piston goin to Essex the other week & it showed no change in the temp!!! :o so..... :(
