Ducati points stator Not looking Good.

Over the years I've seen a few badly re wired stators but this is one of the worst I've seen in a while.

Here's a few pics

Before.

Points removed

Felt pad removed. Which reveals just how badly done to the stator actually is, it's been re wired with the wrong lighting coils, and it looks like someone was trying to make it a 6v DC stator, even some of the connected wires are just floating not actually connected to the lighting bobbins hollow rivets.

I don't know if it ran but I would doubt that it ever ran well.

I've stripped the stator back to a base plate for a clean up before I replace the bobbins. I will try and reuse what I can and replace what I can't.

I've run out of time this weekend so hopefully I'll finish this off after our Euro.

Hi Mark, ok that's fine change whatever is needed, you know best as I say I know very little about stators. I did get it to run but it was a bit rough, the only power I could get from it was the rear brake light. I could see someone had prised the coil fixing as they were bent. I think the work was probably done in Italy as the scooter has not been registered in England which may explain some of the poor work. Well have a good time at euro, have a safe journey.
many thanks John

I will keep my eye on the forum while I'm away in case you need to contact me.

Hi John,
There isn't actually that much wrong with all the main parts of the stator it's just that the bits on there have been very poorly put together.

I think I can re-use three of the bobbins, plus the condenser tests out as working and the points seem good, they look new, I hope to get it fixed up and back to you ASAP.

Mark.

dry joints there too by the looks of things.
The problem is that to do a proper job you need to apply quite a lot of heat fairly quickly which requires a commercial type soldering iron with a large bit to act as a reservoir of heat . You'd never be able to heat up those components and wires sufficiently to get a good solder joint with a 25Watt Maplin special

Plus you really need some flux in order to clean and tin all the parts properly before soldering together due to the oxidation on the wires and tags .

I just use an old non working electric copper tipped solder iron that I heat up on the gas hob or with a blow torch.

Stator cleaned up (paraffin first then ultrasonic bath) looks a little better

Two lighting coils rewound and a NOS Ducati ignition coil.
