clutch adjustment advice please.

hello - I have fitted a new clutch cable to my Li; i adjusted it so there should be a 1mm give on the lever, but it doesn't work, even with the cable super tight it only just barely starts to disengage the engine.

The previous cable on it was very tight indeed, but it worked. Have I done something obviously wrong when fitting? or is the clutch perhaps shot...

Any advice gratefully received!

First check the cable outer has not slipped out at the headset end. This can easily happen when renewing an inner.

If your cable is really tight the kickstart should disengage proving the clutch works, if not use a spanner etc on the clutch lever on the engine then try the kickstart. If it still doesn't disengage the clutch has a problem

If the cables are secure at either end wind the adjuster in till its about a quarter out, ease the trunnion and cable out of the clutch arm, then take a large C spanner and place it around the pivoted end of the clutch arm and activate the arm against the strong tension you will feel. Just after that "bite" point measure against the inner cable. Lock the trunnion on the cable with the Allen key and then activate the clutch arm with the spanner even further forward and drop the trunnion in the clutch arm.
Kickstart should slip with clutch lever at headset end pulled in.
Start scooter and feel the bite of the clutch when you let the lever out. Adjust as necessary.

Thank you for the advice. I also asked the guy who sorted the engine for me and he suggests that as it hasn't been used for a long time (its an italian import and has obviously been standing for years) that the plates may be sticking; the tank is off (i've just POR 15'd it) so i'll refit the fuel system over the weekend and see how it goes.
