I don't think a 1974 Jet 200 quite classes as an historic vehicle does it? Just wondering what I should class it as for taxation purposes on the V55. How much is it to tax a scooter these days anyway?

A vehicle made before 1January 1975 is classed as historic and doesn't need to pay road tax.You do however still have to apply for the tax in the same way,but you wont be charged.

I thought it was supposed to roll on. Or, at least that was the theory. Can anybody confirm this in practice?

The exemption relates to the date that the vehicle was manufactured, not the date that it was registered.
When your scooter becomes eligible you may need a dating certificate to prove the date of manufacture.

Good news. I have a scoot from November '73 which, I thought, I'd paid tax on last year. I was obviously wrong

No, actually I did pay tax on it last year when I didn't need to. It never occurred to me that the onus was on me to change the tax class from "Bicycle" to "Historic."
Thanks for posting this thread as I didn't get caught out again this time

You can apply to stop paying vehicle tax if your vehicle was
first registered before 8 January 1976.

My Jet was 1st registered september 1975 but I had to wait until April 2016 before I could change the class to historic. It seems that the DVLA only update the rolling 40 year thing every April. So if your scoot was registered April 1977 then I suspect you will have to wait until April 2018 to change its class. I took my log book to the post office, changed the class from motorcycle to historic over the counter. They took my log papers from me and taxed the historic for nowt. I received my replacement log papers about 6 weeks later. You only get tax for nowt if the class has been changed.
