Another wiring question.....!

Postby Hughieboy » Mon Jul 27, 2015 11:30 pm

So I've finished fitting a Varitronic to my S2 and now..... The lights are doing strange things!

I have a Casa key ignition switch fitted which was new only a few weeks ago and working fine prior to changing the ignition. I have a simplified loom, unsure what type as it was fitted prior to my ownership with an Indian electronic set up. I haven't changed anything in the headset that I'm aware of but I went on a shake down ride today and found the following;

Key position 1, ignition works as expected so does brake light and horn.
Key position 2, headset top/jewel light comes on with back light but no speedo light.
Key position 3, headlamp comes on and works on dip and main but the rear light and jewel light go out!

Headlamp bulb is a Readspeed Xenon, all other bulbs including tail light are LED's. I've also noticed the rear light and brake light are very dim and may have been before the ignition system change.

There are four wires coming out of the loom headset end, 2 reds, a green and a black. I know the green is the ignition and I guess one of the reds should be a live and the other two must go to the tail light?

Just wondered if this sounded familiar to anyone, I'm not great with a multi meter and not sure what I've done or what's causing it. I have run an earth from the coil to the regulator and from there to the frame then the mag housing. The rear light is separately earthed to the frame.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers in advance.

Wiring is simple... its just a point to point connection. The colour is only there to identify the same wire at the other end of the run.

I would suggest that you buzz the wires with a Multimeter on (continuity test setting) to understand what goes to where. Thats where I start when someone comes to me with a wiring dilema.

You have not mentioned the light switch...

I would also be expecting a brown to be on the main loom.... traditionally this is connected to the live feed.

If you want to test out the wiring without the scooter running I recommend connecting a battery charger to the live feed at the regulator end (normally brown) and the neg from the charger to the engine earth wire...

Good luck

Thanks Bob

Sussed it in the end. The black from the switch wasn't in the right connector for the black to the rear light in the headlamp connector unit. God knows how it worked before with the old ignition switch but I didn't change anything..... All working correctly now though :)
