If I tighten the nut up to 'very' tight the clutch bell seems to have some mild resistance, meaning its tightened down on the bearing. Slacken it just a tiny bit and its fine. Am i missing something?

Sounds like it's trapping the crownwheel and making it hard to turn. If you remove the crownwheel then refit the spider and tighten it will prove it or otherwise.

For the record, it was absolutely that. Had to fettle a shim to give a bit of clearance. All good now.
Sometimes the obvious just doesn't make itself known
