Just had a casing opened for first time since I bought the Scooter around ten years ago. The base of the kickstart shaft has been wearing the top of the clutch - not sure if constant or when engaged but looks like there has been some very aggressive attempts to melt the metal. is this a common fault? There are only four plates in but no idea what brand or spring strength. Any ideas?

Check the shaft is pushed fully thru the outer casing as the casing and circlip wear allowing the shaft to rub the clutch.

thanks fella, i'll check. I was considering packing the shaft to push it out more but was afraid it might not engage the teeth any more if I moved it outwards. i'll do as you suggest and check
cheers
Andy

It's very rare the inside of the casing wears, so tapping the shaft until it is fully bottomed is ok. Then on the outside you will see the shim will be loose, either double it up or fit the MB thicker one and a circlip that has external tangs until there's no in and out play.
