Gearing.

Postby Rick » Wed Aug 26, 2015 1:55 pm

Hi all. I am currently building a series 3, 150 serveta. Im told there is one hell of a jump between 3rd and 4th gears on my model, and advice is to swap the 3rd for a 37 tooth Li 150 3rd. I have a spare Vijay mk2 box kicking around the garage. Can i swap the 37 tooth 3rd gear from this box for the 39 tooth spanish 3rd? The teeth on the cluster for 3rd are the same.

Hello Rick.

As far as I know gears are not interchangable individually, they will not match the christmas tree.
However you could maybe change the complete gear set? The Vijay has a GP 150 gearbox i believe.

I'm sure some-one more knowledgable first-hand might advise you.

Hi Rick,
Download the avantone gearbox visualiser from here:
https://avantone.wordpress.com.
I have a MKI and a MKII the MKI has final drive of 5.65 and the MKII has 4.82.which makes the MKII great on the flat but does not like inclines but it will show 50 on its indian speedo in third. It has similar ratios to an sx 200.I don't have to change down so much on the MKI
Hope this is of some help
Grandpa
P.S if you don't have excel then download Libreoffice a free word processor and spread sheet that will run excel data.

I do have the complete Vijay mk2 gearing, but have never used it so dont know how it would perform in a standard 150

I have no idea personally but I'm sure I've heard of cogs being swapped for exactly the reason you describe, as already said, hopefully someone will be able to confirm.

You stated in your question:

“The teeth on the cluster for 3rd are the same”

With acknowledgement to Sticky & his manual:

Li150 Spanish: 17 39 (Ø 97.2)
Li150 Italian: 17 37 (Ø 96.2)
Vijay Super Mk 2: 17 37 (Ø 96.2)

So, despite there being the same number of teeth on the cluster for third gear, they cannot be the same diameter, can they?
